Is a continuous glucose monitor worth it if I do not have diabetes?

Short answer
A continuous glucose monitor can be interesting in someone without diabetes, but no trial has shown that wearing one improves weight, HbA1c or any hard health outcome in people who do not have diabetes. The FDA cleared the first over the counter monitor in March 2024 for adults not using insulin. Treat it as an education tool, not a diagnostic test.
Continuous glucose monitors are now sold over the counter. The FDA cleared the first, the Dexcom Stelo, on 5 March 2024 for adults 18 and over who do not use insulin. Clearance means the device measures glucose acceptably. It does not mean that wearing one makes a person without diabetes healthier, and that second question has not been answered by good trials.
What the evidence actually covers
The outcome evidence for continuous glucose monitoring sits in diabetes, particularly type 1 diabetes and insulin treated type 2 diabetes, where it lowers HbA1c and reduces time spent hypoglycemic. The 2026 ADA Standards of Care recommend continuous glucose monitoring for people on insulin or on therapies that can cause hypoglycemia. There is no equivalent body of randomized evidence in people without diabetes showing improved weight, glycemia or cardiovascular outcomes.
What normal actually looks like on a sensor
Most people are startled by their own data because they have never seen normal physiology graphed. In a multicenter study of 153 healthy participants without diabetes, mean 24 hour glucose was 99 plus or minus 7 mg/dL, the median time between 70 and 140 mg/dL was 96 percent, and the median time above 140 mg/dL was 2.1 percent. Readings above 180 mg/dL were uncommon. A rise after a meal is not damage. It is the system working.

When it can still be worth wearing
There are honest uses outside diabetes. A two week sensor can show a person exactly what their own breakfast does, can reveal a pattern of overnight highs that prompts screening for sleep apnea, and can catch post meal values above 200 mg/dL that then get confirmed by a formal oral glucose tolerance test. Used that way it is a teaching device that leads to a real test, not a substitute for one.
If you want to try one, set a question first and a stop date. Two to four weeks answers most questions. Confirm anything abnormal with a laboratory glucose or an oral glucose tolerance test before accepting a diagnosis, and do not let the sensor talk you out of foods that were never the problem. The FDA advises that users should not make medical decisions based on the device output without talking to their clinician.
The clinical detail
Over the counter sensors are cleared for adults not on insulin and are not appropriate for people with problematic hypoglycemia, since they are not designed to alert reliably to severe lows. Factory calibrated sensors read interstitial fluid, which lags plasma glucose by several minutes and diverges further when glucose is changing rapidly. Sensor readings are accurate enough to show trends and patterns, and they are not equivalent to a laboratory plasma glucose, so a single sensor value should not be used to make a diagnosis.
Diagnosis of prediabetes and diabetes continues to rest on venous plasma glucose or an NGSP certified A1C, not on sensor data. Where a sensor suggests postprandial values above 200 mg/dL, confirm with a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test.
